Basingstoke-based Gordian Strapping has supplied 14 new RQ-8 Automatic Strapping Machines to Menzies Distribution, a leading newspaper and magazine wholesaler which delivers more than 7.1 million newspapers and magazines every day.
The new machines, which will be used at the wholesaler’s Swansea branch, replace the existing Strapack RQ-8 machines which have performed in excess of one million cycles each.
The RQ-8 was chosen by Menzies Distribution for its robustness and reliability. Ready to operate in less than 25 seconds, it can achieve speeds of up to 40 straps per minute. The machine has only a minimum amount of moving parts with permanently lubricated mechanisms, reducing wear and tear and increasing operational life.
The Self-Correcting Function is particularly helpful in the fast-paced distribution industry. If the machine is operated without a package on the table, the strap forms a small loop which is ejected from the sealing unit, leaving the machine ready for the next cycle. Other standard features include auto strap re-feed, variable strap tension (up to 80kg) and a self-diagnostic function. Finally, the Auto Shut-Off function ensures that the machine enters standby mode after three minutes thereby saving energy.
In addition to serving 25,000 retail customers across approximately two thirds of Great Britain – the largest area covered by one wholesaler, Menzies Distribution delivers printed media to major corporations, airlines, train operators and cruise ships; and exports media to more than 40 countries on five continents.
Menzies Distribution Facilities Manager John Tucker said: “The RQ-8 has proved itself in the demanding conditions of the distribution industry. The machines are maintained by Gordian’s engineers who provide a first class service.”
